A lot is happening in the global disability movement these days, to raise awareness of disability rights and inclusion and prepare for the Global Disability Summit to maximize its potential impact in different contexts. Here are some highlights the Atlas Alliance have received from partner organisations around the world.

In consultation with civil society partners, IDA and the Atlas Alliance are hosting the Civil Society Forum, an addition to the Summit, to leverage the opportunity to amplify the voice and participation of persons with disabilities, through their individual participation and that of representative organizations (OPDs).

A 24 hours virtual event on February 14th IDA, UNICEF, and the Atlas Alliance, represented by Youth Mental Health Norway will co-host a Youth Summit to ensure the inclusion of youth in the Global Disability Summit. This 24 hours virtual event will be filled with exciting speakers, interesting stories and topics which are related to All Youth.

Yesterday 27th January the Atlas Alliance hosted a screening of the documentary Crip Camp and a panel-discussion titled Global Disability Summit: Changing the Narrative on Disability Inclusion which was topped with a letter from Barack Obama.

In August 2021, the Atlas Alliance announced a call for applications. The request was for organisations (NGOs and DPOs) to start new, or to upscaling their advocacy work before the Global Disability Summit (GDS).

Save the Children International recently released their policy on inclusion of children with disabilities. 

- For at Global Disability Summit i februar skal bli en suksess må vi mobilisere til deltakelse i ukene som kommer. Vi må få de viktige personene til å stille og det håper jeg dere kan hjelpe meg med. GDS handler om varig endring på individ nivå, sa en engasjert statsråd Tvinnereim i møte med Atlas- og TOFI organisasjonene 21.12.2021.

These days, in the run up to the Global Disability Summit in February 2022 (GDS22), the Atlas Alliance is heavily focused on mobilization. The GDS is a rare occasion where the world’s focus will be on the rights of persons with disabilities, and the aim of the mobilizing efforts is that the GDS will be on everyone’s lips and minds - not just those of disabled persons’ organizations (DPOs).

The Global Disability Summit 2022 (GDS22) in Oslo can result in genuine change for persons with disabilities - globally. However, to make the GDS an actual game-changer, we need to make use of the coming weeks to raise our voice. Civil Society and Disabled People's Organizations everywhere need to raise their voices and make the summit known. That is why we say that the GDS is happening right here, right now.

- The main strengths of DPOs relates to their strong and wide membership base and their immediate social relevance to the community they serve, which is contributing to a continuous reinforcement of their legitimacy, and recognition by the community and the government as agents of positive change.

In May 2021, the Atlas Alliance partner Mental Health Uganda (MHU), launched the country`s first national phone service providing free counselling, guidance, and information on mental health issues.

- It is high time for rights based and inclusive development. Global Disability Summit can be a real game changer. Civil Society Forum is a great opportunity for linking OPDs with rest of civil society, as such partnerships are important to achieve inclusive development, said State Secretary Bjørg Sandkjær.‍
